Coventry: A U.S. Border Patrol agent was tragically shot on a highway in northern Vermont. This happened just south of the Canadian border, and it’s a big deal.

Authorities confirmed the agent’s death, and the FBI is on it. They also mentioned that a suspect was killed, while another was hurt and taken into custody. This all went down on Interstate 91, not too far from Canada.

Good news is, the FBI said there’s no ongoing threat to the public. The acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman, said the agent was doing their job when this happened. They haven’t released the agent’s name yet, though.

The area where the shooting occurred is part of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector, which covers Vermont and parts of New York and New Hampshire. Federal authorities are still gathering details and will share more as they can.

In response to the incident, the Canada Border Services Agency expressed their condolences. They didn’t say if they were involved in any investigation but offered support to U.S. law enforcement.

Meanwhile, a section of Interstate 91 was closed for a couple of hours after the shooting. The northbound lane reopened later in the evening. Both federal and Vermont State Police are looking into what happened.

Huffman assured that the investigation would be thorough. He emphasized how Border Patrol agents risk their lives daily to keep everyone safe.

Coventry is pretty close to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Newport Station, which is part of the Swanton Sector. This area has a long stretch of border with Canada, about 295 miles.
