Toronto’s subway will see numerous weekend closures in 2025 for essential repairs and upgrades, impacting commuters across the city.
Toronto: The city is gearing up for a busy 2025 with a bunch of full weekend subway closures. They’re doing this to keep the aging transit system running smoothly and to install new cell service.
The TTC recently shared its capital plan for the year, and it looks like there will be quite a few closures. They’re planning 26 full weekend shutdowns on Line 1: Yonge-University alone. This includes work for repairs and the new Ontario Line.
On Line 2: Bloor Danforth, there will be 23 closures, with some for Rogers to set up a new 5G network in the subway. Other closures are for repairs and upgrades, including the Scarborough Subway Extension.
These closures are actually more than the 25 planned for 2024. The TTC says closing sections for the whole weekend gives them way more time to get things done compared to just a few hours at night.
Last year, slow zones due to aging infrastructure made commutes longer, with some routes adding up to 14 minutes to trips. While some slow zones have been cleared, the TTC insists that these closures are necessary to keep everything safe and reliable.
They know it’s a hassle for commuters, but a TTC spokesperson mentioned that it’s all about keeping the system in good shape while also making room for future expansions.
