A recent cyber incident at TDSB may have compromised student data from 1985 to 2024, raising concerns among parents and officials alike.
On January 8, the TDSB sent out a letter to parents, explaining what went down with their PowerSchool software. This breach happened between December 22 and 28, and it looks like other boards, like Peel and York Region, were affected too.
Stacey Zucker, the Interim Director of Education, mentioned that their cybersecurity team jumped into action right away to keep things running smoothly.
Now, if you or someone you know was a student from September 3, 1985, to August 31, 2017, here’s what might have been compromised: names, birth dates, health card numbers, and even home addresses.
For those who were students from September 1, 2017, to December 28, 2024, the list is a bit longer. It includes everything from names and birth dates to medical info and notes from principals.
The good news? TDSB said they don’t keep any Social Insurance Numbers or banking info in their system, so that stuff is safe. Plus, PowerSchool confirmed that any data accessed by unauthorized users has been deleted and wasn’t posted online.
The TDSB is taking this very seriously, and the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario is looking into it. It’s definitely a situation to keep an eye on.
