A tragic incident in Bedford Basin leaves one sailor dead after a boat capsized during a routine operation
HALIFAX: A sad day for the Royal Canadian Navy as they report the death of a sailor in Bedford Basin. The incident happened when a rigid-hull inflatable boat capsized late Friday night.
Two sailors were out on the water when things went wrong around 10 p.m. Thankfully, the Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre Halifax jumped into action, sending out two Coast Guard ships to help.
Both sailors were pulled from the water and rushed to a Halifax hospital. Sadly, one of them couldn’t be saved despite the efforts of the paramedics.
The other sailor received treatment and was later released. The Military Police are now looking into what happened that night.
Commodore Jacob French expressed the Navy’s deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing that the sailor’s commitment and service will always be remembered.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston also shared his condolences, calling the news devastating and extending his thoughts to the sailor’s loved ones.
