Markham: So, there’s been a spike in these staged collision carjackings in the Greater Toronto Area. Police are really sounding the alarm about it. They say it’s been happening since November, and it’s pretty concerning.

Basically, what happens is that the suspects cause a minor crash on purpose. When the driver gets out to check things out, they’re met by armed thieves who steal their car. It’s a scary situation.

In November, there were two incidents in Markham alone. One involved a guy who got rear-ended by a Honda. When he stepped out, two armed suspects confronted him and took his Lexus. Another case had a cyclist bumping into a Cadillac, and then a dark sedan pulled up with more armed suspects who stole the Escalade.

Fast forward to January, and the police were called to a similar scene in Vaughan. A woman’s Cadillac was lightly hit, and when she got out, two guys tried to take it but couldn’t because of a kill switch. Lucky for her!

Then, just a few days later, in Richmond Hill, a dark SUV rear-ended a Mercedes. When the driver got out, a suspect jumped in and drove off. Thankfully, no one got hurt in any of these incidents.

The police are urging everyone to stay alert. They say if you feel uneasy or think someone’s following you, head to a police station or call for help. If you find yourself in a crash and it feels off, don’t hesitate to dial 911. Your safety is the priority, and being a good witness can really help. Stay safe out there!
