A fire that ravaged a historic building in Orillia is believed to have been set on purpose, prompting an ongoing investigation by the OPP.
First responders quickly evacuated nearby homes and businesses, and thankfully, no one was hurt. The police are looking into the situation, believing that the fire was deliberately started, which caused extensive damage.
They’ve been asking local businesses and residents for any video footage that might help figure out what happened. Some folks have already shared clips showing a suspicious person lighting a small fire nearby, which could be linked to the blaze.
As of now, no suspects have been identified, but the OPP is urging anyone who was in the downtown area between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Tuesday to reach out. They’re also asking business owners to check their surveillance cameras for anything unusual during that time.
Fire crews worked tirelessly for over 30 hours to control the flames. The building, which was over a century old, housed various businesses and apartments. Sadly, it looks like it’s a total loss since the roof and second floor collapsed.
Local victim services are stepping in to assist those who lost their homes. Meanwhile, road closures are still in place around the area, so it’s best to steer clear while the first responders are on the scene. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the OPP or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
