A unique weather phenomenon occurs as high pressure clashes with lake-effect snow in Ontario, creating unexpected snowfall.
Toronto: There’s something pretty wild happening with the weather right now. Even though Ontario is basking in record-high pressure, Lake Ontario is throwing a curveball with some unexpected snow.
On Saturday, while most of the province enjoyed sunny skies, a strange little low-pressure area popped up over the lake. It’s like the high pressure created a perfect setup for this localized snow event.
So, what’s a thermal low? It’s basically a small area of low pressure that forms when the surface heats up, causing the air to rise and pressure to drop. With the cold arctic air hanging out over the lake, it set the stage for this unusual weather.
As the air started to swirl over Lake Ontario, we could see it on satellite images. The high pressure was pushing the thermal low westward, leading to some light flurries along the shores.
It gets even cooler! The cold air from the land was sinking in to replace the rising air over the lake, creating a mini weather system. You could actually see this little rotation on the satellite, with warmer air spiraling out and colder air wrapping around.
