Winnipeg: A candidate for the Manitoba Progressive Conservative leadership is in hot water. Wally Daudrich’s campaign shared a post that mentioned his opponent’s Muslim faith.

The post came from a user named Vicki Poutine. It quoted a newsletter from Daudrich’s campaign that condemned antisemitism. But Poutine added a line targeting Obby Khan, saying he shouldn’t become leader.

Daudrich’s campaign manager said it was a mistake. A staff member shared the post without noticing the added comment. Once they realized, they took it down right away.

Joseph Ben-Ami, the campaign manager, called it nonsense. He insisted the comment about Khan’s faith was not from their campaign. He said it was an honest mistake.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims wants Daudrich to apologize. They say targeting Khan for his faith is a clear case of Islamophobia.

The provincial Progressive Conservative party also asked Daudrich to clarify the situation. They emphasized that their party is open to all Manitobans, regardless of religion.

Brad Zander, the committee chair, stated they believe the post was unintentional. However, they want Daudrich to confirm his commitment to inclusivity.

Khan feels the explanation isn’t enough. He believes an apology is necessary and that such language should be condemned.

The Tories are currently in Opposition after losing the 2023 election. They will choose a new leader on April 26. Khan is a former pro football player and cabinet minister representing Fort Whyte in the legislature. Daudrich is a longtime Tory board member and hotel owner from Churchill.
