The race for the Liberal leadership heats up as candidates rush to meet the deadline for submissions and member sign-ups
Ottawa: The Liberal Party is buzzing with activity as they gather on Parliament Hill. They’re on the hunt for their next leader, and time is ticking.
Today and tomorrow, the federal Liberal caucus is meeting to discuss the future. Candidates have until 5 p.m. to throw their hats in the ring and get their paperwork sorted.
It’s a bit of a scramble since the party needs up to ten days to officially approve anyone. So far, no one has been given the green light yet.
Plus, candidates have just four days left to sign up new members who can vote in the leadership race. The big day for electing the new leader is set for March 9, just 45 days away.
As of now, former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, ex-finance minister Chrystia Freeland, and Ottawa MP Chandra Arya have all submitted their documents and the initial $50,000 deposit.
Others are also eyeing the position, including former house leader Karina Gould and Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste. It’s shaping up to be an interesting race!
