Liberal leadership hopefuls are actively campaigning in Quebec, seeking support ahead of the upcoming leadership vote
Ottawa: So, it looks like Mark Carney is really making waves in the Liberal leadership race. He’s got some big names backing him, and today, Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne is expected to throw his support behind Carney. That’s a pretty sweet deal for Carney, especially since Quebec is such a key area for the party.
Carney was in Toronto yesterday, and he made it clear he plans to run as an MP in the next election, no matter how the leadership race shakes out. It’s all about securing that party support in Quebec, which has a whopping 78 seats. That’s crucial for both the leadership and the next election.
And it’s not just Champagne. Carney’s also racked up endorsements from Defence Minister Bill Blair, Transport Minister Anita Anand, and Housing Minister Nate Erskine-Smith. That’s a solid lineup!
On the flip side, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland is gearing up to connect with francophone voters. She’s set to appear on a popular Radio-Canada talk show tonight, which should be interesting.
Meanwhile, Karina Gould, who was out campaigning in Quebec, is now back in Toronto making calls. And let’s not forget about Frank Baylis, the only Liberal from Quebec in the race. He’s postponed a town hall to focus on getting members signed up before the deadline.
The Liberals are set to choose a new leader to replace Justin Trudeau on March 9. Seven candidates have thrown their hats in the ring, including Carney, Freeland, Gould, and Baylis, among others. It’s shaping up to be quite the contest!
