Karina Gould aims to restore faith in the Liberal Party as its youngest leadership candidate
OTTAWA: So, Karina Gould is stepping up as a candidate for the Liberal leadership. She’s got a vision to rebuild trust in the party, and she’s pretty passionate about it.
At just 37, she’s the youngest in the race and believes it’s time for fresh faces in leadership. It’s all about bringing in a new generation, she says.
Gould’s journey is quite interesting. She was born in Burlington, Ontario, and has always been active in her community. After high school, she even spent a year in Mexico volunteering at an orphanage, where she met her husband and picked up Spanish.
She studied political science and Latin American studies at McGill and even went to Oxford for international relations. Talk about impressive!
Before diving into politics, she worked for the Mexican Trade Commission in Toronto and did some consulting in Washington, D.C. She jumped into the political scene when Justin Trudeau won his first majority in 2015.
Gould has made history in her career, becoming the youngest woman to serve as a federal cabinet minister and the first to give birth while in office. She’s also known for pushing through the national child care program.
She’s held various cabinet positions, including minister for democratic institutions and minister for international development. Recently, she became the government House leader, which has really boosted her visibility.
On the personal side, she’s married to Alberto Gerones, and they have two kids, Oliver and Taya. She’s all about family and community.
Gould sums it up well: “We need to rebuild our party so we can keep building our country.” Sounds like she’s ready to take on the challenge!
