OTTAWA: So, Justin Trudeau just dropped a big announcement. He’s stepping down as the Liberal leader and prime minister once they find someone to take his place. He’s already asked the party president to kick off the search for a new leader and has put Parliament on hold until March 24.
In his statement, Trudeau shared how every day as prime minister has been fueled by the strength and kindness of Canadians. He’s been all about fighting for the middle class since 2015, supporting each other through tough times like the pandemic, and standing up for democracy and climate action.
He mentioned that Parliament has been stuck for months, which is why he asked the Governor General to prorogue it. Over the holidays, he had some deep chats with his family about what’s next for them. He told his kids about his decision to resign after the party picks a new leader through a fair process.
