A recent report highlights record population increases in Quebec, driven largely by immigration trends across various regions
MONTREAL: So, there’s this new report from Quebec’s statistics institute that’s making waves. It shows that a bunch of regions in Quebec are growing faster than ever, and guess what? Immigration is a big part of that story.
Montreal is really leading the charge, adding over 91,000 people from July 2023 to July 2024. That’s a whopping 4.2 percent growth rate, one of the highest we’ve seen anywhere!
Then there’s Quebec City, which also hit a new high with a 2.4 percent increase. Laval and the Outaouais and Mauricie regions are right behind, keeping the momentum going.
The stats folks say this growth is mainly thanks to immigration, especially temporary immigration. It turns out that non-permanent residents, like temporary workers and international students, are outnumbering those who are becoming permanent residents.
Interestingly, the report also mentions that Quebec saw a few more deaths than births during this time. It’s the first time in a while that the province has had a natural population decline over a year.
As of July 2024, Quebec’s total population is nearly 9.1 million. Quite a milestone, right?
