Recent cold weather in North America contrasts with record global warmth, highlighting climate anomalies
North America: It’s been freezing here lately, right? But guess what? While we’re bundled up, the rest of the world is breaking temperature records.
Even with our chilly weather, the planet just set a whole week of record-high temperatures for January. Can you believe that? It’s wild how the globe is warming up while we’re shivering.
So, what’s been happening? Well, the Polar Vortex has been hitting Canada hard, with wind chills dropping to -50°C. That’s cold enough to freeze your skin in no time!
And it’s not just Canada feeling the bite. The cold has reached all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico, causing a historic winter storm. Florida even saw over 20 cm of snow in some areas, which is pretty rare for them!
But here’s the kicker: while we’re dealing with this cold snap, the world is experiencing some serious warmth. From January 14 to 22, every day set a record for the warmest global temperature for that date.
On January 19, the average global temperature hit 13.30°C, which is almost a degree warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a record that even beat last year’s numbers!
What’s causing this? Well, places like Alaska and Siberia are seeing unusually warm temperatures, which is part of a larger pattern affecting the climate.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag, isn’t it? We’re freezing here, but the world is heating up. It really makes you think about how interconnected our climate is.
