A freighter trapped in ice on Lake Erie is finally on its way to Canada after being freed
The U.S. Coast Guard worked hard to free it. They had icebreaking ships on the scene since Thursday. Finally, on Saturday, they managed to get the freighter moving again.
The crew of 17 is safe, and the ship didn’t suffer any damage. It’s common for freighters to run into ice during winter, but sometimes it can be really tough to break through.
After being freed, the Manitoulin had to navigate through about 20 miles of ice before reaching open water. It still has a journey ahead, traveling through more icy areas to get to Canada.
The Coast Guard is keeping an eye on things with helicopters and has more ships ready just in case. The freighter will spend the rest of the winter in Canada once it arrives.
