Chrystia Freeland is stepping away from Trudeau as she vies for the Liberal leadership amid growing public discontent
Ottawa: So, Chrystia Freeland is really trying to carve out her own space away from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. She’s been pretty vocal about her disagreements with him lately, saying the government is heading in the wrong direction.
She even quit her cabinet position back in December after Trudeau hinted he’d replace her as finance minister. That had to sting a bit, right? Freeland mentioned that if she were in charge, she wouldn’t have made that move.
Interestingly, she’s also shifting her stance on the consumer carbon price. After supporting it for years, she’s now saying it’s not popular with the public, so she’s changing her tune.
Freeland is in a competitive race for the Liberal leadership, going up against Mark Carney and Karina Gould, among others. The deadline for candidates to declare and pay their initial deposit is coming up fast.
Gould has already made waves by raising enough funds in just 24 hours to cover her deposit. It’s a hefty price to pay, with a total of $350,000 needed to get on the leadership ballot.
This whole situation is definitely heating up, and it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out!
