Rumors are swirling that Premier Doug Ford may announce an early election in Ontario, possibly as soon as next week
He’s planning to use the recent threats of tariffs from U.S. President Trump as a reason to push for an early vote. Trump’s been talking about imposing some hefty tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which Ford thinks could rally support for his government.
Ford mentioned that he needs a mandate to protect jobs and that the only way to get that is through the people’s vote. But the opposition, led by NDP’s Marit Stiles, isn’t buying it. She argues he already has a majority and suggests this election is more about saving his own seat than anything else.
Even though he doesn’t have to call an election until June 2026, it seems like he’s ready to shake things up sooner. A recent poll shows the Progressive Conservatives way ahead of the Liberals, which could mean another win for Ford. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out!
