Premier Doug Ford announces an election date while revealing plans for a new transit tunnel in Brampton, enhancing local transportation.
Brampton: So, Doug Ford just dropped some big news! He confirmed that Ontarians will head to the polls on February 27. This comes after a lot of chatter about an early election.
He’s planning to go to the Lieutenant Governor on January 29 to officially dissolve the government. Ford says he needs a strong mandate to tackle those pesky tariffs from the U.S. He’s really pushing for support to protect families and businesses in Ontario.
During a press conference, he also shared plans for a new tunnel to extend the Hurontario LRT into downtown Brampton. This extension is about four kilometers long and aims to connect more riders to better transit options.
Ford mentioned that this project will help thousands of daily commuters. It’s all about making transit easier and more efficient for everyone in the area.
He’s already committed to extending the light rail route into Brampton and adding a loop in Mississauga. The next steps involve detailed planning for the tunnel and making sure it connects well with the Brampton Innovation District GO Station.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria emphasized that Brampton, being one of the fastest-growing cities, deserves top-notch transit to support its vibrant community.
Originally, this project was supposed to wrap up in 2024, but it looks like that timeline has slipped. Ford has been busy announcing various projects during his time as premier, including new highways and subway lines.
He’s got a lot on his plate, and it seems like he’s trying to get everything sorted before the election season kicks off. Later today, he’s heading to Caledon for another announcement about a new trauma center for first responders.
