A recent winter storm has led Florida to surpass snowfall records of major Canadian cities
Milton: Can you believe it? Florida just had a snowstorm that outdid some of Canada’s biggest snow-making cities! It’s wild to think about, right?
This week, a massive winter storm swept through the Southern U.S., bringing snow to places like New Orleans and even the beaches of Florida. It’s not something you see every day!
So, how did this happen? A strong ridge of high pressure from Alaska let the polar vortex dip down, sending cold air all the way to the Gulf Coast. That’s pretty rare!
When the warm and cold air met over the Gulf of Mexico, it created a powerful storm that dropped snow in places that usually don’t see it. Milton, Florida, recorded a whopping 22.4 cm of snow, breaking state records!
In fact, that single day of snowfall in Florida was more than most Canadian cities have seen this winter, except for one spot in New Brunswick. Can you imagine?
Even more surprising, Florida is outpacing cities like Toronto and St. John’s in monthly snowfall totals. That’s a big deal, especially since January is usually the snowiest month in Canada!
As the storm moves on, it’s strengthening in the Atlantic. While Canada’s East Coast might dodge the worst of it, places like Ireland are bracing for some serious weather. Wind gusts could hit over 130 km/h!
