Emily Hampshire shares her journey from ‘Schitt’s Creek’ to ‘The Rig’ and the impact of international fame on her career
Toronto: Emily Hampshire is making waves with her role in The Rig. The show is super popular on Prime Video in Canada, the U.S., and the UK. It’s back for a second season, and it’s even more thrilling than the first. After that cliffhanger, her character Rose and the crew find themselves in the Arctic, which surprised everyone, including the cast.
Hampshire shared that they had no clue where they were headed after Season 1. They thought they were off to Hawaii, even having a Hawaiian-themed wrap party. But then they learned they were going to the Arctic instead. She joked that being Canadian made it easier for her to act cold since she’s used to the chilly weather.
One of the standout moments in Season 2 is when Rose comes back to life after a serious injury. Hampshire was relieved to find out she wasn’t being killed off. She loved how her character evolved into a leader, which mirrored her own journey in her career.
While The Rig dives into sci-fi, it also touches on real issues like climate change. Hampshire praised the show’s creator for balancing entertainment with important topics. She loves how the show presents facts without being preachy, making it relatable and thought-provoking.
Looking ahead, Hampshire hopes the next season won’t pick up right after Season 2. She thinks the show needs some time for production, especially for the visual effects. She also enjoyed the underwater scenes and would love to see more of that in the future.
From The Rig to Schitt’s Creek, Hampshire has had a diverse career. She enjoys taking on roles that are different from her real self. Playing Stevie from Schitt’s Creek was a fun escape for her, as she’s quite different from that character.
Reflecting on Schitt’s Creek, Hampshire noted how Canadians were slow to embrace the show until it gained international fame. She recalled a time when they were filming, and someone yelled at Eugene Levy. But as the show grew in popularity, the local community became more supportive.
Hampshire mentioned that Canadians often wait for a project to be loved elsewhere before they jump on board. She finds it amusing how they can be self-conscious about celebrating their own successes. Despite that, she knew Schitt’s Creek had potential from the start, especially with a talented cast.
When asked about a possible return to her role as Stevie, Hampshire is open to whatever Dan Levy has planned. She joked about teasing him first but would definitely be on board if the opportunity arose.
