Former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre has officially entered the race for the Quebec Liberal Party leadership, despite financial challenges.
Québec: So, Denis Coderre, the former mayor of Montreal, is throwing his hat in the ring for the Quebec Liberal Party leadership. He made it official recently, even though he’s been dealing with some serious financial issues.
Last June, he hinted at running, but it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster since then. There’s been chatter about him owing around $400,000 to tax agencies, which hasn’t helped his image much.
But he’s got some news! Coderre said he’s reached a deal with the tax folks to sort out his debts. He’s also curious if the Quebec government tried to sabotage his campaign by leaking his financial troubles. He’s even thinking about getting a lawyer involved to look into it.
On top of that, Coderre has some big ideas for Quebec. He wants to nationalize water and give more power to local municipalities. Sounds ambitious, right?
As for the competition, the front-runner seems to be Pablo Rodriguez, a former federal cabinet minister. Other candidates include Charles Milliard, who used to lead the federation of Quebec chambers of commerce, and tax lawyer Marc Bélanger. It’s shaping up to be an interesting race!
