OTTAWA: So, Mark Carney was on “The Daily Show” recently, chatting about all sorts of things like Trump and tariffs. He kept it light but didn’t really spill the beans on whether he’s thinking about running for Liberal leadership.

During his 20-minute chat with Jon Stewart, they joked about Trump’s wild idea of making Canada the 51st state. Carney said that’s not happening, but they could be “friends with benefits,” which got a good laugh from the audience.

When it came to tariffs, Carney warned that Canada should gear up for a trade spat, just like the last time Trump was in charge. He also talked about the carbon tax, pointing out that a lot of Canada’s emissions come from the oil sector. He thinks it’s better to clean that up instead of trying to change how Canadians live overnight.

While he didn’t say he’d run for leadership, he did call himself an outsider in Canadian politics. It seems like he’s keeping his options open. Meanwhile, there’s buzz that former finance minister Chrystia Freeland might jump into the race soon.

As of now, only Ontario MP Chandra Arya and former Montreal MP Frank Baylis have officially entered the contest. It’s shaping up to be an interesting political landscape!
