Winnipeg: Finally, we’re breaking free from that super cold weather that had everyone bundled up. So, what’s coming next?

Well, it looks like a wavy jet stream is setting up an active storm track across Canada. We can expect a few clippers to move from the northern Prairies toward the Great Lakes and then head over to Atlantic Canada.

And guess what? British Columbia is going to miss out on this action. The West Coast has been enjoying a nice dry spell, and it seems like that’s going to stick around for a bit longer, even into February.

The big ridge keeping B.C. dry is pushing the jet stream north, which means most of Canada will be dealing with some weather changes through the end of January.

As these clipper systems develop on the northern Prairies, they’ll follow the jet stream south, kind of like train cars on a track. Expect a good amount of snow from northern Saskatchewan down through Manitoba and into northwestern Ontario, with totals possibly reaching 10-20 cm next week.

And if you’re near the Great Lakes, get ready for some heavier snow. Those clippers are going to mix with lake-effect snow, leading to some serious shoveling in the usual snowbelts.

Even though some lakes are starting to freeze over, there’s still enough open water to keep the lake-effect snow going. This week, Great Lakes ice coverage hit about 23.2 percent.

These weather systems will continue to move east toward the Atlantic provinces, where they might pick up some extra moisture and bring heavier snow to parts of the East Coast.
