High winds and storm surges leave many in B.C. without power as crews work to restore services amid challenging conditions
Vancouver: So, it’s been a wild day in B.C. with high winds knocking out power for around 170,000 folks. BC Hydro is hustling to get things back on track.
Environment Canada is warning that the winds could hit 70 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 100. That’s some serious weather moving in!
Areas like Bowen Island and West Vancouver are bracing for gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour this afternoon. Thankfully, things should calm down later tonight.
But it’s not just the wind; there’s also a coastal flooding warning for places like Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island. They’re saying to watch out for some serious waves.
With all this wind, BC Hydro reported over 280,000 customers were without power earlier today. Trees are down, lines are tangled, and it’s a bit of a mess.
Crews are working hard, but they’re facing challenges like debris on the roads and ongoing strong winds making it tricky to get things done safely.
BC Ferries had to cancel several sailings because of the rough conditions, affecting travel between Vancouver and Victoria, as well as Vancouver and Nanaimo.
In the city, Stanley Park is closed off due to safety concerns with trees. The park has been hit hard by recent winds, and they’re worried about more tree failures.
On top of that, there’s a storm surge warning for B.C.’s south coast, with water levels possibly reaching a meter high. Residents are advised to stay alert.
Sidney, just north of Victoria, has issued a storm alert, urging people to steer clear of certain areas due to the high tide and storm surges.
Metro Vancouver is also at risk, with flooding likely in low-lying areas. The high tides are expected to hit early in the morning and again in the afternoon.
